When it comes to the vagina, several different procedures can help women have the look and confidence they want to have. While many of these procedures are clear about what they are and what they entail, some of them are a little less heard of than others. A <\/span>hymenoplasty<\/span><\/a> is one of those procedures that some women may find themselves wondering what it is and what happens during and after. What is the Hymen?<\/span><\/h2>\n

To understand a hymenoplasty, it is first important to understand what the hymen is. The hymen is the thin membrane of tissue that partially covers the inside opening of the vagina. The presence of this membrane is often regarded as ensuring a woman is \u201cpure\u201d on her wedding night, meaning she has never had sexual intercourse before. However, sexual intercourse is not the only thing that can \u201cbreak\u201d the hymen \u2014 in fact, tampon use and exercise (especially bike riding and horseback riding) are two ways that the hymen can be broken as well. Because of this, it should never be assumed that just because a woman\u2019s hymen is not intact does not mean she is not a virgin.<\/span><\/p>\n

What is a Hymenoplasty?<\/span><\/h2>\n

A hymenoplasty is a procedure that repairs the hymen. Many women seek out this procedure for religious reasons or cultural reasons. Others may have been the victim of a sexual assault and would like to have the hymen repaired. Still yet, other women may want to recreate the \u201cfirst-time\u201d experience with their significant other. Whatever the reason behind your choice, a hymenoplasty can help give you confidence or aid in healing emotional scars left by unwanted encounters.<\/span><\/p>\n

How is a Hymenoplasty Performed?<\/span><\/h3>\n

A hymenoplasty is performed in your doctor\u2019s office using local anesthesia to prevent pain and discomfort. This numbs the area to allow the patient to stay awake and alert during the procedure but remains comfortable. The procedure usually takes about one to two hours and involves the remaining skin being carefully taken and stitched back together, creating a \u201cnew\u201d hymen. After this is finished, there will be no way to tell whether or not the hymen is still intact or if it has been reconstructed. This can bring about peace of mind to the patient.<\/span><\/p>\n

What is Recovery Like?<\/span><\/h3>\n

The recovery time for a hymenoplasty is relatively short; it usually takes less than a week to have you up and back to your daily activities. In fact, many women find that they are able to return to their activities within only a day or two after the procedure. However, it is important to remember that you should give your body six weeks to heal properly, avoiding sexual intercourse, strenuous activity, or tampon usage.<\/span><\/p>\n
