What Is a Clitoral Hood Reduction?

A clitoral hood reduction is a procedure that carefully reshapes and reduces excess tissue around the clitoris. The goal is to minimize projection and create a more proportionate, refined contour.

The clitoral hood (also called the prepuce) is the fold of skin that naturally covers and protects the clitoris. In some women, this hood can become enlarged or elongated due to genetics, hormonal changes, weight fluctuations, aging, or changes after childbirth. When excess tissue is present, it can create both physical and aesthetic concerns.

The procedure doesn’t involve the clitoris itself or the nerves responsible for sensation. Many women experience improved sensitivity because excess tissue is no longer acting as a barrier.

Clitoral hood reduction is often performed in combination with a labiaplasty because when only the labia are reduced without addressing the hood, it can create an imbalanced appearance sometimes referred to as a “beak.” Combining the procedures allows for a more harmonious, natural result.

Am I a Good Candidate for Clitoral Hood Reduction?

Women choose to have a clitoral hood reduction for a variety of both aesthetic and functional reasons. You may benefit from this treatment if:

  • You notice excess tissue visible through clothing or swimwear
  • You experience discomfort during exercise, cycling, or daily movement
  • You feel reduced sexual stimulation due to tissue covering the clitoris
  • Hygiene feels more difficult or requires extra effort
  • You desire a more proportionate or refined appearance
  • You’re considering a labiaplasty and want a balanced result
  • You’ve experienced asymmetry or changes after childbirth, injury, or prior procedures

You may not be a candidate if you have certain medical conditions that affect healing, active infections, or unrealistic expectations about outcomes, such as expecting a guaranteed increase in orgasm intensity.

Clitoral Enlargement and Testosterone Therapy

As testosterone therapy has become more common in women, we’re seeing more patients experience enlargement of the clitoral glans and surrounding hood tissue, sometimes referred to as clitoromegaly. For some women, these changes can cause increased prominence, irritation, rubbing, discomfort with clothing, or self-consciousness about appearance.

We’ve developed specialized clitoral hood reduction and contouring techniques to address excess hood tissue and improve the overall proportion and appearance of the clitoral area, with careful attention to preserving sensation, function, comfort, and natural anatomy.

A thorough consultation will help determine what’s appropriate for your body and goals.

The Procedure: What to Expect

Our goal at the Intimate Health Center is to make your experience as comfortable as possible. Clitoral hood reductions take place in a private setting at our Orange County locations.

Your journey will look like this:

  • Consultation with Dr. David Ghozland

An expert in clinical cosmetic gynecology, Dr. Ghozland will meet with you to discuss your goals, review your medical history, and take a look at the area.

  • Preparation

The procedure uses local anesthesia with sedation to help keep you relaxed and comfortable.

  • The procedure

Dr. Ghozland uses radio frequency energy for exceptionally precise incisions and minimal-to-no lateral thermal spread, allowing for precise surgery and minimizing bleeding and trauma to your surrounding tissue.

  • Final steps

Dissolvable sutures are placed over the incisions and naturally dissolve within 3-4 weeks.

If you decide to combine the procedure with a labiaplasty, both treatments can be completed in the same session, allowing for a single recovery period and a more cohesive aesthetic outcome.

The Elite Recovery Protocol™: What Happens After Surgery?

Recovery is often much more manageable than patients expect. Most women resume daily activities with some limitations within a few days.

Our unique Elite Recovery Protocol™ promotes quicker, smoother healing with:

  • Daily check-ins
  • Curated recovery essentials
  • A dedicated surgeon dashboard to monitor healing progress
  • Direct team access throughout your full recovery period
  • Options for strategic tissue healing and regenerative therapies

Discomfort is typically mild and can be managed with oral pain medication during the first few days. A numbing cream is also provided to increase your comfort during daily activity.

Typical Healing Timeline

Healing progression typically follows this pattern:

  • Week 1: Swelling and mild discomfort
  • Week 2–3: Significant reduction in swelling, increased comfort
  • Week 4–6: Tissue continues to settle and refine
  • After 6 weeks: Most women are fully recovered

You’ll be asked to avoid sexual activity for approximately 6 weeks and limit strenuous exercise during the early healing phase. You’ll also receive other simple, clear care instructions, such as:

  • Using a spray bottle with water instead of wiping initially
  • Avoiding soap in the area during early healing
  • Transitioning to gentle cleansing and baby wipes after a few days

Our team will guide you closely throughout recovery, and we’re always available if you have questions or concerns.

Does Clitoral Hood Reduction Affect Sensation?

The clitoris and surrounding nerves responsible for sensation are completely preserved and aren’t touched at all throughout the procedure. You shouldn’t experience any loss of sensation. In many cases, patients actually notice improved sensitivity. By reducing excess tissue, the clitoris is less shielded, allowing for more direct stimulation.

Procedure Risks & Safety at Intimate Health Center

While clitoral hood reduction is generally considered safe, every procedure carries some level of risk.

Common risks may include:

  • Minor scarring
  • Asymmetry
  • Under-reduction

Dr. Ghozland helps reduce procedure risks with:

  • A comprehensive consultation process
  • A thorough pre-operative history review

How We Combine Clitoral Hood Reduction and Labiaplasty

Many women are surprised to learn how often these procedures are performed together. Labiaplasty reshapes the labia minora, while clitoral hood reduction refines the surrounding tissue. When only one is performed, it can create an imbalance in appearance.

Addressing both allows for a smoother, more natural contour and avoids the “beak” appearance that can occur when the hood is left unaddressed. When combined, both procedures are completed in a single session with one recovery period, making it a practical and efficient option for many patients.

Pricing & Consultation

Pricing for clitoral hood reduction varies depending on your specific goals and whether procedures are combined. Financing options, including CareCredit and Cherry, may be available.

Your consultation will include a detailed evaluation, a discussion of your goals, and a personalized treatment plan with estimates provided.

Dr. Ghozland and his staff are amazing! From the first consultation everyone was kind and welcoming. Dr. Ghozland made me feel very comfortable. His vibe is very easy going/personable. Dr Ghozland takes his time with his patients and goes out of his way to make sure you understand what your options are. He even called me on a Sunday to see how I was doing after my surgery. To me it’s like having a Dr. on call. He is the best Dr. Now I have my daughter and friends going to him too.
—Isabel
Dr. David Ghozland and his staff were very attentive. They made me feel really comfortable and they were really informative. I would recommend him to anyone looking for an OB/GYN or for anything cosmetic. I am very lucky considering that I have had bad experiences with other OB/GYN’s in my past. Thank you Dr. Ghozland For always being available to help.
