What is a Labiaplasty Revision?

A labiaplasty revision, also called a labiaplasty reconstruction, is a corrective procedure performed when results from an initial primary labiaplasty are unsatisfactory, incomplete, or cause ongoing discomfort.

Revision procedures vary depending on what occurred during the original surgery and what outcomes the patient is now seeking.

Most patients require a minimum of three months post the initial procedure before a revision can be performed to allow for optimum healing and for the tissue integrity to return to normal so that the revision procedure will offer best-in-class results.

Types of Labiaplasty Revision Procedures Dr. Ghozland Performs

There are several different types of labiaplasty revisions/labiaplasty reconstructions available, depending on your needs.

Revision for Excess Tissue Removal During Prior Labiaplasty

This is usually the most common reason for a labiaplasty revision when too much labial tissue is removed during the initial procedure, which not only affects appearance, but can affect function as well as comfort.

Revision for Uneven or Asymmetrical Results

Oftentimes, there may be asymmetry or full amputation of the labia minora.

This is often the most distressing scenario for patients and a more complex revision for the surgeon. We have performed over 7000 cosmetic Gyn surgical procedures, lectured nationally on the topic, published research and written books and chapters on the subject. Experience and a deep understanding of the anatomy and function is required to approach each patient uniquely and to address as reconstruction requires careful technique, extensive experience in order to restore natural-looking results.

Revision for Insufficient Tissue Removal

This occurs when the surgeon removes less tissue than the patient wanted, often due to inexperience, overcaution, or a breakdown in communication about the desired results and goals.

This type of revision is typically more straightforward and involves  completing the procedure to achieve the intended outcome, look and goal. If two sides of the labia were not reduced evenly during the original procedure, a revision can correct the asymmetry and create a more balanced appearance. This is typically straightforward and easier to revise.

Labiaplasty Revision to Reduce a Prominent Clitoral Hood

Some patients will undergo a labiaplasty minora without addressing the clitoral hood.

This will often leave a very prominent clitoral hood in the presence of much smaller new operated and reduced labia minoras, giving a non natural and surgical appearance.  A revision in this case reshapes the clitoral hood to reduce prominence and improve the overall symmetry and contour of the area.

Risks to Understand Before a Labiaplasty Revision Procedure

As with any surgical procedures, labiaplasty revision carries certain risks. These will be explained to you carefully by Dr. David Ghozland.

It is highly recommended that you wait a minimum of three months after the primary procedure to undergo a revision type surgery. With any surgery, there are small risks associated with revision, including infection, bleeding, changes in sensation, scarring, and swelling.

If pain, swelling, and redness, or itching persist beyond the expected healing window, or if the incision appears infected, patients should contact our office right away. Dr. Ghozland reviews all risks in detail during the consultation so patients can make a fully informed decision.

What a Labiaplasty Revision Procedure Involves

The approach depends entirely on the type of correction needed and the condition of the tissue as a result from the original procedure performed.

Dr. Ghozland uses highly advanced instruments including Soniquence which is a radiofrequency device to deliver maximum precision with minimal lateral thermal effect, minimizing blood loss.  Our procedures are performed under local anesthesia in our office procedure room.

Duration of the procedure varies on the complexity of the correction needed and will be further clarified and discussed at the initial consultation.

How Long Labiaplasty Revision Recovery Takes

Recovery is similar overall to the initial procedure, however, Dr. Ghozland’s office utilizes proprietary recovery protocols to optimize results, improve recovery, minimize swelling, and pain.

Minor to moderate discomfort is common for one to two weeks and is manageable with over-the-counter or prescribed medication, depending on the extent of the procedure. Patients will be given a very detailed instruction on what to do and not to do as the healing progresses.

Our team will schedule follow-up visits the week after the procedure and again at every two-week interval. If you are an out-of-state patient, we are happy to schedule telehealth consults for follow-ups so that most patients do not need to return to our Orange County office for a follow-up.

Why Labiaplasty Revision Requires a More Experienced Surgeon

Revision surgery is more technically demanding and requires a much deeper understanding of anatomy than a first-time labiaplasty because the surgeon is working with tissue that has already been altered and may have scar formation.

Also, in order to maximize the end results of the revision surgery, a surgeon should have a significant amount of procedures performed so that a very deep understanding of techniques, ability to customize the technique for the individual need in order to obtain the desired results.

Dr. Ghozland has performed over 7,000 cosmetic gynecology procedures with hundreds of five-star reviews.

He has not only published in medical textbooks in regards to techniques for labiaplasty reduction and clitoral hood reduction techniques, but has published research papers on the subject as well.
